Shrug off that case of the Mondays you’ve had all day and check out what made news in the gadget world today. For starters, there are a couple new developments in mobile data plans in the US. On the Verizon side, the carrier may soon be launching family data plans, making it a bit more affordable to have multiple smartphones on the same account. T-Mobile is playing the restriction card, as it will start imposing data roaming limits on April 5.

Featured: On the subject of T-Mobile, our Chris Davies wrote a column about where the big T is headed. Read it here – Could “Unlimited” Save T-Mobile USA? Also on our featured list today, Chris Burns shows us what some of the best iPhone 4S apps are in his article, A Week With the iPhone 4S. Spoiler alert – the SlashGear app is in there.

Gaming: When it comes to using video games in a classroom environment, it’s a win-win situation, so this trial of using the DSi’s speech recognition in school is pretty cool. So is this build of a portable Counter-Strike game on Android. But the biggest thing we heard about today is the Xbox 720 – new rumors suggest there will be two versions of the new Microsoft console.

Software & Gadgets: Speaking on Microsoft, a technical preview of Office 15 has been released. Woot. On the Apple side of things, AirPort Utility, Time Capsule, and AirPort Base Station have all been updated. But if you’re looking for someone a bit more exciting and new, you have to check out this – Panasonic demos WiGig with tablet and in-car system.

It’s been all about the smartphones this week, with the long-awaited HTC Touch HD finally reaching our hands for one of the first full English-language reviews online. If our initial video demos last week whetted your appetite, head over to part one and part two of our full review to really gorge yourself. Meanwhile, to cheer up those in the US who are still smarting over HTC’s decision not to offer the Touch HD there, we reviewed AT&T’s newly released BlackBerry Bold.

Elsewhere, movement in the netbook and ultraportable segments showed once again that niche has the edge over mainstream notebooks, at least when it comes to interest. ASUS announced their N20a 12-inch ultraportable amid rumors of a ZX-series of 12-inch “grown up Eee PC” notebooks, while WiBrain’s I1 UMPC put a less-than-pretty face on some serious battery life. Meanwhile, we reviewed the Sony VAIO TT, more than four grands’ worth of Blu-ray and SSD-toting beauty.

In gaming, Nintendo’s DSi made a huge splash in Japan with just about every one of the 200,000 consoles the company had prepared for launch-weekend selling. Since everyone else will have to wait until Summer next year to get their hands on the DSi, we attempted to distract ourselves with a preview of the soon-to-released Microsoft New Xbox Experience for the 360, followed by a review of Gateway’s FX6800-01e gaming PC, one of the first machines to use the Intel Core i7 “Nehalem” processor.

Apple was no stranger in the headlines this week, for better and for worse. In the former category comes confirmation from AT&T’s CEO that an official iPhone tethering solution will be offered soon, together with word from Apple themselves that customers hoping for a new Mac mini should “be patient”. It won’t be this year, though, as the company is insisting their holiday line-up is complete. In the more worrying category is news that some new MacBook owners are experiencing issues with their trackpad missing clicks; it’s hoped a software update will address the problem.

Still, Apple are sitting pretty in the financial stakes, which is more than you can say about NVIDIA and Sprint. Both companies released their Q3 2008 financial reports this week, and both had little to crow about.

In other reviews, we took a quick look at the AT&T QuickFire, unboxed the Microsoft Zune 120GB Gears of War 2 Special Edition, and enjoyed some serious playtime with WowWee’s Rovio WiFi-enabled webcam. In fact, we had just enough time left over to make some holiday gift suggestions to TopTechGifts: if you’re stumped for some present ideas, make sure to check out their list.

Unlocking the handheld for homebrew tinkering, such as running PMP software, ebook reader and unofficial games, as well as supporting cheats and game saves, the Acekard2i is functionally the same as its DS predecessor but simply adds DSi compatibility.

Demo video of the Acekard 2i in action after the cut

Although commonly associated with pirated software, flash-carts also give console owners more flexibility in how they use their handhelds and legitimately-obtained games. The Acekard 2i can be used to store game save-files directly to a microSD card, removing memory capacity as an issue limiting save points, as well as running backups.

It will also let you use Action Replay cheat codes, if you’re not as impressive in a particular title as you’d like to be. The DSi is not yet available outside of Japan.

This generation of Pokemon titles kicks off with a bang as Pokemon Black and Pokemon White land in North America, Europe, and Australia in March. To coincide with the popular titles, Nintendo is bringing out two special limited edition DSi bundles for fans on March 6th.

The sets will come with a custom Nintendo DSi carrying case and each DSi will have the new legendary Pokemons Reshiram and Zekrom etched on the casing. Both of the new legendary Pokemons are among the more than 150 new Pokemons in Pokemon Black and Pokemon White. The retail price will be $179.99. You can bet the bundles will be snatched up quick so you better get there fast if you want one.

The games will work with any device on the Nintendo DS system, but if they use the DSi or the DSi XL you can use the games new Xtransceiver device to talk to others in video chats. Up to four players can use Xtransceiver through a local wireless connection, or two players can do the same online through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. If youre playing on an original DS or DS Lite, you can voice chat, and all players can send written messages using the touch screen.

The regular versions of Pokemon White and Pokemon Black will be available in North America on March 6th and will retail for $34.99 each.
